Looking for a new boat? Read this book first and educate yourself on what to look for when it comes to performance, handling, design and more!
A short book written in easy to understand terms so anyone can understand what to look for in a good design and how to test a boat to reveal the good and bad characteristics of its hull.
There is a section on testing a hull in calm water as calm water testing can reveal a huge amount about a hull if you know what tests to do and what to look for. It then goes on to rough water testing and testing on a bar.
Inspired by a customer who admitted he had been around boats all his life but didn't know the difference between a good one and a bad one. Reading this book will enable you to tell the difference and give you an understanding of why it is important.
Testimonials for GOOD BOATS BAD BOATS AND HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE
Two more reviews of the book GOOD BOATS BAD BOATS AND HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE and what it told the respective owners about their boats.
Hey Jim. Just read your book. Excellent well done. I reconn Bob4 passes them all.
Hi Jim, just finished reading your book, some great insights. Seems our wee boat exhibits a lot of the problem traits and it explained a lot about why!
Thanks for the book! But it's opened a can of worms, hahaha! I thought 'time' was the fourth dimension but maybe boat design is!!!
In truth, I suspected I was right on some things, and some of what you've written confirms it for me. Other stuff was very illuminating. I haven't driven as many boats as some folks but I have driven and ridden shotgun in a few under some pretty adverse conditions, including some hairy (big surf) beach work (our version of bar crossings that may not require long traverses like the Kaipara, but can still be deadly due to LOTS of overlapping inputs in shallow water). I have been in some terrible boats over the years, and it's about time someone threw some light on things for the layman.

Well all I can say is that this is the best read I’ve had so far this year. After nearly 50 years of playing around in boats and the last 32 years as a sea going Engineer all those little and some big handling faults one has encountered when playing around on the water in boats have finally been explained in plain English. It’s somewhat disheartening to learn that all the shit handling that you put up with because it’s something that every boat you’ve ever driven has done, turns out to be due to bad design by people who have no clue what they are doing.
I would say folks if any of you are looking to buy a boat read this book so that you can at least be fully informed before spending a fortune on a badly designed boat. For those of you that already have a boat I would suggest that you still buy the book as it will explain why your boat handles the way it does and what to watch out for if you ever get caught out in rough water. It’s something that every boatie should read for sure.
